Redfin Dwarf Rainbowfish 5-6CM (Papua Rainbow) Melanotaenia maccullochi was first described by J.D. Ogilby in 1915, based on two specimens collected from the Barron River near Cairns, Queensland, by Mr. A. Anderson. This species is named in honor of ichthyologist Allan Riverston McCulloch. M. maccullochi is a type of rainbowfish with several isolated populations in northern Queensland, exhibiting various color forms. Typically, these fish display a bronze to brownish hue on their upper body and a lighter brown to white on the lower half, featuring seven or eight lateral stripes that may be continuous or broken, especially in younger individuals. Their heads are brownish-grey, with lips that can range from brown to grey, sometimes showing hints of white or orange. They have a small red to orange spot on the upper operculum, silver irises, and fins that are light yellow to orange-red at the base, transitioning to darker shades towards the tips, occasionally adorned with brown spots or lines. Breeding males exhibit more vibrant colors, with enhanced body stripes and vivid red fins. A notable nape stripe appears in live fish during courtship and sparring, varying in color from whitish-yellow to orange-red depending on the population. Females tend to be less colorful, although some may display subtle hints of the males’ coloration. Picture is of the fish in stock, if require any more please get in touch All Sizes are approx
