They are quick to dive into the water if they sense any disturbance. Young turtles of these species can thrive in a standard aquarium, which should include ample water space along with a dry area for basking and drying their shells. This dry space can be created using raised substrate or a floating turtle dock, available in various designs. It’s essential to provide water deep enough for swimming, but also a section where the turtle can comfortably reach the surface to breathe while resting on the substrate. For species like snappers and softshells that prefer to hide beneath the substrate, part of the water must be shallow enough for them to breathe without surfacing, while the rest can be deeper for swimming.
