It thrives in a diverse range of habitats, primarily in still water. Being a large species, it requires an exceptionally spacious aquarium with a sandy substrate, numerous hiding spots among driftwood, rocky caves, and areas with dense vegetation. It’s important to provide ample surface cover using floating plants to help diffuse light. The filtration system should be efficient, creating areas of moderate water movement alongside quieter resting spots away from the current. Regular partial water changes are crucial during the warmer months to keep nitrate levels low. A tightly fitting lid is essential for the aquarium since these fish are skilled jumpers, and a small gap should be left between the water surface and the cover slides to allow the fish to access humid air. Utilizing a tall aquarium with a low water level in a paludarium style significantly decreases the chances of jumping while also offering plenty of surface cover and natural waste control. Snakeheads are obligate air breathers, meaning they need access to atmospheric air to survive. This species is territorially aggressive and is best kept alone once they reach adulthood, or as a compatible male-female pair ideally chosen from a group during the cooler months. Since females tend to be more aggressive, pairing larger males with smaller females is the most effective long-term strategy. It’s important to promptly remove any rejected fish to prevent injury. These fish thrive in a species-only aquarium, but if you wish to include tankmates, they must be able to withstand the low winter temperatures that this species requires for seasonal changes to mimic the wet and dry months.
