Leporinus Affinis 12-15CM The Banded Leporinus is widely found in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, thriving in rocky areas with swift currents. Adult fish gather in large schools and are often seen feeding on crustaceans, insects, plant material, and worms. They grow quite large and need a spacious aquarium, ideally measuring at least 6ft x 2ft x 2ft or larger. Juveniles have fewer vertical black stripes compared to adults and grow rapidly, so it’s important to provide them with ample space from the start to avoid stunting and health issues. The aquarium should be well-established and designed with a smooth substrate of sand or small gravel, plenty of sturdy driftwood, and an open swimming area at the front. While plants aren’t necessary, they can enhance the tank’s appearance; however, since these fish will eat plants, it’s crucial to select hardy varieties like Anubias spp. and Java Fern (Microsorum) that can be attached to the decor. Effective filtration is vital, ideally through external canisters, along with high oxygen levels, which can be achieved with spray-bar returns above the water line or additional powerheads. Maintaining high water quality is crucial for this river species, so regular partial water changes are necessary to minimize nitrogen waste. Secure, tight-fitting covers are essential, as these fish are known jumpers. Although they are social in their natural habitat, Banded Leporinus can be aggressive in smaller groups in aquariums. Therefore, it’s best to keep either a single fish or a group of at least 8 individuals introduced at the same time, which helps distribute any aggressive behavior throughout the group, preventing any one fish from being constantly targeted. Suitable tankmates include medium to large peaceful cichlids, especially those that prefer flowing waters, large characins, and other compatible species.
