Yellowband Tropheus 7-8CM The Yellowband Tropheus is recognized from the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, where it inhabits rocky environments, feeding on algae in the sunlit shallows. At present, these fish require classification, which will clarify their relationship with the various forms known as Tropheus sp. ‘Black’. Since hybridization can occur, it is advisable to keep Tropheus in groups of their own species, and these groups should be sizable to help distribute aggression. Housing 15 or more of these spirited fish necessitates a large aquarium, ideally 1.5m or longer, to allow individuals to evade each other. Smaller groups tend to diminish as harassment and bullying can be overwhelming for the females and weaker males. It is crucial that the entire group is introduced simultaneously to prevent aggression that would otherwise be directed at any new arrivals. When introducing large numbers of fish in this way, it is essential that the filtration system is cycled and capable of managing the waste load. Considering the investment involved, using a mature filter and bacterial inoculation with products like Microbe Lift is highly recommended. As always, water quality should be meticulously monitored during the initial weeks. Excellent water quality must be upheld consistently, with partial water changes performed at least once or twice a week, which may necessitate the addition of buffers to maintain the required high pH and carbonate hardness levels.
