Blue Neon Jewel Cichlid 6-7CM The Neon Jewel Cichlid has been in aquariums for many years, likely due to selective breeding. Its exact origins are unclear, but it is thought to be related to H. guttatus, though no one knows for sure. These fish are very territorial and need large tanks, ideally at least 4 feet long, with lots of hiding spots in the decorations. In the wild, they can move freely between territories, but in a tank, their aggressive behavior can cause issues. Use a sandy bottom and create hiding places with rocks, pebbles, slate, overturned flowerpots, and driftwood to break their line of sight. Dense plants are good, but since they like to dig, choose sturdy plants like Anubias and Java Fern that can be secured to the decor, along with some floating plants. The filter should work well, but avoid strong water currents, and do regular water changes to keep nitrate levels low. It’s best to keep Neon Jewel Cichlids in pairs, but just picking a male and female doesn’t ensure they will get along, as the stronger fish might harm the weaker one. A better approach is to buy a group of 6 or more young fish and let a pair form naturally, then find new homes for the rest. If you want tankmates, choose carefully, as these cichlids can become very aggressive during breeding. Good options might include larger African tetras or Synodontis catfish, but be prepared to move them if the cichlids start to breed.
