Masked Julie 3-4CM(Julidochromis transcriptus) The Masked Julie is recognized from the north-western edge of Lake Tanganyika, where it inhabits the shallow, sediment-rich rocky environment. Their territories are typically centered around cracks or fissures in the rocks and rubble. The natural diet mainly includes small crustaceans, insect larvae, and molluscs that are foraged from the algae-covered substrate, along with occasional drifting plankton. To properly house this species, the aquarium should be at least 3ft long, equipped with adequate filtration, water movement, and oxygenation. The ideal substrate would be coral sand or aragonite, which helps maintain hard and alkaline water. Rocks should be arranged to form small outcrops and numerous caves or crevices, ensuring plenty of broken lines-of-sight. J. transcriptus can exhibit some aggression towards each other in the home aquarium, so it is generally advisable to keep them singly or in compatible pairs. These cichlids can coexist in a Tanganyikan community with fish of similar size and temperament that occupy different areas of the tank; however, they should not be mixed with other Julidochromis species. In larger tanks, multiple pairs can be maintained as long as there are sufficient territories available (several per fish) and a variety of visual barriers. Masked Julies are sensitive to poor water conditions, so it is important to perform small partial water changes regularly.
