However, it is somewhat susceptible to barbel infections or erosion, making it crucial to keep these fish on a soft sand substrate instead of gravel, where waste can accumulate out of sight. Regular maintenance, including frequent partial water changes, is essential to ensure the fish remain healthy. Create plenty of shaded spots with driftwood, rocks, and dense plantings. Other peaceful species like smaller pencilfish, tetras, and rasboras make excellent companions, as their presence in the midwater can encourage the Corydoras to come out more often. Corydoras can breathe air through their intestines, so it’s important to leave a small gap between the water surface and the cover slides, allowing them to surface for air multiple times a day. An albino variant is occasionally available and may also be sold as Rabaut’s Cory. While it resembles O. zygatus, the fry of these species differ significantly in appearance.
