Spotted Congo Puffer 6-8cm The Spotted Congo, also known as the Leopard Puffer, is found in Pool Malebo (previously referred to as Stanley Pool), which is a lake-like expansion in the lower sections of the Congo River system located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This species inhabits rocky environments within the rapidly flowing, well-oxygenated waters, where it can often be seen hiding among the crevices of rocks or riparian plants, poised to ambush any small fish or crustaceans that swim by. The Spotted Congo Puffer necessitates a spacious, mature aquarium equipped with a soft, sandy substrate and numerous caves and crevices for concealment. Given that these fish are avid feeders and produce a significant amount of waste, effective filtration is essential (an external canister filter is recommended). The aquarium should feature areas with moderate water movement and a high oxygen level, which can be achieved by using a powerhead with a flow diverter directed towards the water’s surface, or by maintaining a slightly lowered water line so that the water returning from the filter splashes onto the surface. This species is the smallest of the African pufferfish and is highly sought after by enthusiasts of unusual fish. However, imports from this area have become irregular due to political instability and health concerns, making wild specimens among the rarest pufferfish available in the market, despite being more commonly kept in the mid-twentieth century. Consequently, there have been only a few reports of this fish being maintained in home aquariums in recent years. While most observations indicate that this particular pufferfish is relatively peaceful towards its own species and other fish, it is wise to exercise caution and have a method for separating tankmates if needed—especially after spawning. Providing ample visual barriers within the aquarium will enhance the likelihood of successfully keeping a group (introduce them simultaneously and monitor closely), and any potential companions should be fast-swimming and short-finned. Rocks, driftwood, and resilient plants that can tolerate current can all be incorporated into the aquascape.
