Movie Review of the second film of the Divergent series: Insurgent at Leicester Square on Wednesday 11th of March.
I must say you need to definitely watch the first movie Divergent to understand this movie, otherwise you will be lost and you won’t understand everything that goes on.
The film picks up straight where it left off from the previous movie, and it dives straight into action. However, some of the action throughout Insurgent does seem a little bit far-fetched or over-the-top – as you wouldn’t see any of it happening in real life – but I guess that’s why it’s a movie.
You can also tell a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into making this film. The graphics alone were amazing! The scenes were spectacular. At one point, even a building got to fly through the sky with the elegance of a ballerina.
The director and cinematographer held on to every little detail in this film and made it all seem so realistic – which isn’t easy to do with a sci-fi flick.
Main characters Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) fit easily into their roles and carried on with that high intensity attitude their characters displayed in the previous film. For example, Tris was always quite feisty in Divergent and Shailene Woodley carries this forward in Insurgent.
Kate Winslet goes from strength to strength in her portrayal of the unlikely villain in the film. Her superior acting experience shines through on screen as she plays evil-with-a-purpose Janine Matthews. Look out for Hollywood A-lister Naomi Watts or the TV talents of Mekhi Phifer.
Despite the superlatives, I feel that they left out a lot of scenes that were in the book, and the film overall does feel a little bit rushed, where they’ve tried to fit most scenes in without making the film too long. Also, in the beginning they’ve missed out a few of the characters that you get to know better in the book, for example Uriah. But you will only notice this if you’ve read the books…. So maybe don’t read them! No, of course you should.
Overall, I think this is a film that you must see, there is constant action all the way through it, and it will always keep you on your feet, so there won’t be any falling asleep. The film left me looking forward to seeing the next film in the series, Allegiant, which should be out in cinema’s next year.
Insurgent hits the Cinema’s on the 19th of March, so I would pre-book your ticket before it gets sold out.
