Reed fish 20-30CM The Reed fish, also known as a ropefish or snakefish, belongs to the bichir family and is a freshwater species native to West and Central Africa. It is the sole member of the genus Erpetoichthys. This unique fish has both lungs and gills, enabling it to survive in low-oxygen environments and even outside of the aquarium. Reedfish thrive in dimly lit, slow-moving waters and are typically nocturnal, displaying less activity during the day. To create an ideal habitat for them, provide a sandy substrate in the aquarium along with numerous hiding spots, driftwood, and caves. Due to their tendency to escape, caution is necessary when keeping Reedfish. Ensure that any openings in the tank lid are covered, as they may use them as escape routes. Additionally, be mindful of filter and pump pipes, as Reedfish can swim up them. Using netting or nylon socks around inlet pipes can help prevent escapes. These carnivorous predators require a spacious aquarium to reach their maximum size of around 20 inches. To avoid potential predation, do not house them with smaller fish or fry. A well-rounded diet for Reedfish includes live food like feeder shrimp, frozen or live bloodworms, and occasional algae wafers or tablets. It is advisable to break up hard pellets and tablets to prevent blockages. PICTURE IS OF OUR FISH IN THE SHOP
