Synodontis Petricola The Petricola Catfish is found exclusively along the northern rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. To create a suitable environment, the aquarium should be spacious and have a soft sandy substrate to safeguard the sensory barbels. It’s important to include a good number of rocky caves or PVC tubes, some driftwood, and sturdy plants that can thrive in hard, alkaline conditions to create shaded areas. However, make sure to leave ample swimming space at the front of the tank. Efficient filtration is essential since these fish are heavy eaters and generate a significant amount of waste. The water must be well-oxygenated with a moderate current, and regular partial water changes are necessary to keep nitrate levels low. Being a social species, S. petricola should be kept in groups. Their tank mates should be relatively peaceful and larger than 3cm (1.2″) to avoid being preyed upon; they thrive in a Tanganyikan community of medium-sized fish. S. petricola closely resembles S. lucipinnis, but it reaches a slightly larger adult size. Moreover, S. petricola typically has smaller spots on its head compared to the larger, connected spots found on the flanks of S. lucipinnis.
