Elegant Cory 2-3.5CM The Elegant Cory is a stunning catfish that is perfect for a mature softwater aquarium. This species is peaceful and should be kept in groups of five or more because of its shoaling behavior. In its natural habitat, G. elegans can be found in forest streams and tributaries of the middle and upper Amazon River basin, where the water is soft and slightly acidic. Therefore, they thrive best in similar conditions in a home aquarium over the long term. Unlike many other Corydoras, this species often shoals in midwater. Nevertheless, it is important to provide a soft sand substrate to protect their delicate sensory barbels when they are on the bottom. Regular maintenance, including frequent partial water changes, is essential to keep these fish healthy. Make sure to create plenty of shaded areas with driftwood, rocks, and dense plantings. Other peaceful species, such as smaller pencilfish, tetras, and rasboras, are great tankmates. Their presence as ‘dither fish’ in midwater will encourage the Corydoras to come out and be seen more often. Corydoras can breathe air through their intestines, so it’s important to leave a small gap between the water surface and the cover slides, allowing the fish to surface and take in air as needed.
