Choosing a dark substrate, along with suitable background and decor, will enhance the vibrant colors of these fish. It’s important to keep Five Banded Barbs in groups of six or more, as they are social creatures. If housed with more aggressive fish, they may become shy, so it’s best to pair them with fish that have a similar size and temperament. This species is a fantastic alternative for those who appreciate the look of the slightly larger and more assertive Tiger Barb, but prefer a less nippy option. While this is the true Pentazona barb, it is quite rare in the aquarium trade. Due to identification mix-ups, many fish sold as Pentazona are actually the more vividly colored D. hexazona. To tell them apart, check for a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin on the pentazona, along with the brighter colors found in the aquarium strains of hexazona.
