Empire gudgeon The Empire Gudgeon is a fantastic choice for many hardwater community tanks. These fish are generally peaceful, allowing them to thrive in larger groups, but it’s best to steer clear of very small tankmates, as they might be seen as food. In their natural habitat, adult Empire Gudgeons are found in the lower sections of rivers, often among flowing streams, tree roots, and lush vegetation. Juveniles, on the other hand, tend to inhabit turbulent brackish estuaries. Adult fish breed in freshwater, and once the eggs hatch, the currents carry the fry downstream to the sea. It’s believed that the young fish grow and develop in brackish waters before returning to freshwater to restart the breeding cycle. For the aquarium, a dark substrate, along with suitable decor and background, will help the fish feel secure, encouraging them to display their stunning colors. They will enjoy having shaded spots among dense plants, although this can be challenging if you want to keep them in brackish conditions. In freshwater setups, good companions could include rainbowfish, medium-sized peaceful barbs or tetras, and even livebearers like platies or swordtails.
