The Elephant Nose is a fascinating species of fish native to the Niger River and its tributaries in Western Africa. Its body is predominantly black and features an irregular shape, characterized by a long, slender tail and what appears to be a nose, which is actually an extension of its mouth. This trunk-like appendage is utilized for foraging, communication, navigation in the water, and self-defense. The fish has a weak electrical organ located at the caudal peduncles, which aids in locating food. It thrives in a minimum of a 50-gallon aquarium with optimal water conditions. Generally shy and reclusive, the Elephant Nose prefers an aquarium with a fine gravel substrate and ample plants and rocks to provide hiding spots from bright light. To enhance the viewing experience, many aquarists opt for a “ghost tube,” a transparent plastic tube that allows for daytime observation. Once it becomes familiar with its environment, the Elephant Nose can develop a remarkable level of tameness and trust, even allowing itself to be held. It coexists well with larger, peaceful species but may exhibit aggression towards fish of similar or smaller sizes.
