Three Beacon Pleco L091 Leporacanthicus triactis is a striking large suckermouth catfish found in fast-flowing river areas where water rushes over rocks and is rich in oxygen. This species can grow quite large and needs a spacious, well-established aquarium with soft, acidic water. Use a dark substrate and create plenty of shaded spots with bogwood and sturdy rock caves, making sure all decorations are secure since larger fish can be somewhat clumsy. The water must be well-filtered because adult fish produce a lot of waste, and a strong current should be created with additional powerheads to mimic their natural, oxygen-rich habitat; they do not thrive in still waters. Regular partial water changes are important to keep nitrogen waste low. Generally, this species is peaceful, but it can be territorial with its own kind and similar fish. You can keep more than one in the same tank if it is large enough and has many hiding spots and visual barriers. L. triactis pairs well with medium-sized characins, some sturdy Corydoras catfish, and various rheophilic cichlids. Depending on factors like mood, sex, age, or environment, these fish can change color from brown or gray to dark charcoal. There are also different color variations, with some showing bright orange markings; one popular variant is known as ‘tiger fin.’ Adult fish usually have a lighter overall color than younger ones but always keep their distinctive orange spots, which become more vibrant as they grow, making them a favorite among L-number enthusiasts. Like other Leporacanthicus species, these fish have a small, backward-facing blunt ‘horn’ on their heads and unique upper jaw teeth that resemble fangs.
