Blue Eye Congo Tetra 4-5CM (Phenacogrammus Aurantiacus) The Golden Congo tetra is known to live in blackwater streams and rivers that offer ample cover from waterlogged wood and leaf litter, where these fish swim in lively shoals. While aquatic plants are limited in this type of environment, the vegetation along the banks is often quite abundant. For this shoaling species, the aquarium should have plenty of swimming space along with areas of cover for them to retreat into. Although their care needs are similar to those of the more commonly known Congo tetra (P. interruptus), these fish are much less domesticated and should be kept in soft water with low nitrate levels. Dim lighting will help them feel more at ease, and floating plants can assist in achieving this while also improving water quality. As a shoaling species, these fish thrive in larger groups, which boosts their confidence and encourages the males to showcase their brightest colors as they compete to impress each other and attract females. In such conditions, they tend to overlook most tankmates, although long-finned species might be too tempting to resist. In a suitably sized aquarium, they can coexist well with similar characins, West African dwarf cichlids, and Synodontis catfish, but they can also be kept with most species that prefer similar water conditions and are not overly aggressive.
