African Red-eyed Tetra (Arnoldichthys spilopterus) The African Red-eyed Tetra is a relatively large characin that needs a spacious tank with ample swimming area. Typically peaceful and occasionally a bit shy, this lively species thrives best in groups of at least 6 individuals (10 or more is even better) because of its shoaling behavior. Suitable tankmates should be of comparable size and temperament; avoid small or long-finned species. Good companions might include Pelvicachromis spp., African dwarf cichlids, or some of the smaller Synodontis catfish species. The aquarium should feature a dark substrate and background, ideally with plenty of driftwood and dense plants. This setup will help the fish feel more secure and will enhance their colors beautifully. When aquascaping, try to position most of the decorations towards the back of the tank, leaving a large open swimming area at the front. The water should be clean and well-oxygenated, with a moderate flow rate. Unlike many characins, the Red-eyed Tetra has notably large scales, giving it a slightly barb-like look.
