This fish thrives in warm, acidic, and soft water shallows, often mingling in large schools with other tetra species. Typically, its coloration is a striking reddish hue complemented by a unique iridescent pink stripe. However, it earns its name and popularity from the stunning appearance of adult males during breeding season, which display a rich red color and fins edged in black. When in full breeding display, these males rank among the most vividly colored South American tetras. In an aquarium setting, the Watermelon Tetra is a resilient species that pairs well with various tankmates. For the best visual effect, they should be kept in groups of at least five, although larger groups enhance the coloration and behavior of both males and females.
