January Tetra (Hemigrammus hyanuary) 2-3CM Known in earlier literature as the January tetra, due to the type specimen being discovered in Lake Hyanuary (Lake January) close to Manaus in Brazil, this species is a peaceful shoaling fish, perfect for well-established softwater aquariums. The aquarium should be equipped with ample driftwood to create numerous shaded spots, and the tannins released from the wood will aid in acidifying the water while imparting a natural tea-like hue. While plants are not plentiful in the natural habitats of this species, a moderate amount of vegetation will be beneficial and will help the fish feel more secure. The lighting should be kept dim (tannins and floating plants can assist in softening brighter lights), and opting for darker substrate and background colors will enhance their stunning colors. Costello tetras should always be kept in adequately sized groups, with 6 being the minimum recommended, though 10 or more would be preferable. This not only provides the fish with a greater sense of security but also creates a more effective, natural-looking shoal. Tankmates should also be small and gentle, as these fish can be easily intimidated by larger or more boisterous species. Ideal companions would include Corydoras catfish, small dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma or Mikrogeophagus, and some of the smaller Loricariidae (suckermouth catfish). As previously mentioned, you might also find this fish marketed as the January tetra. Pictures are of the fish in stock, if require any more please get in touch all sizes are approx
