Gabunense Killifish 3-4cm (Male) is a charming little fish native to West Africa and is among the most popular species of killifish or egg-laying toothcarp in the aquarium hobby today. It naturally resides in Cap Lopez and nearby regions in Gabon, where it thrives in marshy areas and shallow waters. In an aquarium setting, this fish is quite peaceful and relatively easy to care for, making it a great choice for community tanks. With proper care, it can live up to three years. I usually keep my Australe in breeding setups, but if you prefer to include them in a community tank, they thrive best with subdued lighting (using floating plants like Salvinia), a dark substrate (as lighter substrates can dull their colors), and plenty of plants to create a lush environment. This setup really highlights their beauty. They can tolerate a wide pH range of 5.0 to 7.0, and the water should be soft to medium hard, with a temperature range of 64 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, for optimal longevity, I recommend maintaining a temperature around 72 to 74 degrees. They adapt well to various commercially prepared foods, whether flake or frozen, but they truly enjoy a variety of live foods, so always aim to provide a diverse diet.
