The Blue Gularis Killifish is also referred to scientifically in the genus Aphyosemion. This captive bred variety of Killifish is normally found in water holes, streams, and marshes in Africa. The term Killy is derived from the Dutch word meaning ditch or channel, not because this fish is a killer in the aquarium. These fish are ideal fish for the community aquarium, but may chase small fish such as guppies. They will add some vibrant colour and activity to these tank set-ups. The males of this species are a vibrant blue and red coloration with a yellowish dorsal fin. The females are plainer in colour and are generally gray to brown with a faint spotting pattern. Blue Gularis Killifish are not demanding and can adapt to a variety of water conditions. These fish prefer a heavily planted tank and softer water on the acidic side. This species of Killifish is not an annual species. Their eggs do not need to be removed from the water after spawning. They prefer to lay their eggs within a spawning mop or java moss. They are very easy to breed, and the eggs will hatch after about 2 month’s time. Once hatched, place the fry in a small holding tank and feed the newborn fish live baby brine shrimp. Blue Gularis Killifish will accept most live foods such as brine shrimp, white worms, tubifex, and some dry flake and frozen foods.
