These charming surface dwellers are perfect for small, densely planted tanks. The aquarium should be well-established and feature numerous hiding spots among driftwood and thick foliage, including floating plants to soften the light. Filtration needs to be effective, but the water flow should be gentle, as most Firemouth Panchax populations thrive in slow waters. Regular small water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels low. Being a social species, these fish should be kept in groups of eight or more. While juveniles are quite peaceful, males may engage in minor squabbles as they grow up; however, this typically isn’t an issue in well-planted tanks with plenty of visual barriers. Suitable tankmates should be of comparable size and temperament, steering clear of any small species that might be seen as a meal. Good companions could include small anabantoids, Corydoras catfish, deep-bodied tetras, dwarf cichlids, small to medium-sized barbs, rasboras, and small Loricariids (suckermouth catfish).
